Honors Program Application Process
Incoming First-Year Students
Admitted students who fit any of the following criteria will be invited to apply to the Honors Program. Students who apply by either the November 1 Early Action or Early Decision deadlines or the February 1 Regular Decision deadline are eligible to apply for the Honors Program; however, those that apply by November 1 will receive priority consideration to the Honors Program.
- A weighted GPA of 3.80 (on a 4.0 scale)
- An unweighted GPA of 3.65 (on a 4.0 scale)—available only to students whose high schools don’t provide weighted GPAs
- Combined SAT score of 1360 or higher or an ACT composite score of 30 or higher
The Office of Admission will directly email eligible students with an invitation to submit an application to be considered for program admission.
Incoming Transfer Students
Transfer students may petition to join the program if they have earned a GPA of 3.60 or higher at their previous institution with at least 16 graded credit hours. A student must complete at least 60 hours at Butler in order to receive any Butler honors at commencement.
Current Students
Students who do not enter the University Honors Program upon admission to Butler University may still join the program via petition. Students who join after matriculating complete the program at the same (or higher) rate as students who entered as incoming students.
- Students may also petition for admission to the program. With the support of a faculty member (download recommendation form) and a GPA of 3.60 or higher, a student who has a true desire to be in the program may apply by writing a letter describing educational background, goals and how participation in the Honors Program will contribute to their education at Butler University.
