Online vehicle registration for AY 24-25 permits is open from July 22nd through September 2nd.
Parking Permit Wait List Link (Click Here)
- All students (living on- or off-campus) must register their vehicles with the Parking Services office and obtain a valid parking permit in order to park on campus or an authorized city street.
- Students may not park vehicles on the streets of the Butler Tarkington Neighborhood that surrounds campus. A legal commitment filed by the City of Indianapolis requires Butler to enforce this.
- Permits are limited to the number of parking spaces available. Permits for on-campus residents have typically sold out in July. An online wait list will be posted for students who still wish to obtain a permit.
- In AY 23-24, 281 Students received a permit offer from the wait list prior to move-in weekend. This process is important to allow us to receive and address accommodations for medical needs and transportation required for coursework before all permits are made available.
- Parking enforcement for non-registration will begin on the first day of instruction for each academic year.
All University parking facilities are regulated by a permit system. To utilize these parking lots, you must have your vehicle registered with the University Police Department. These lots are monitored 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Faculty, staff, students, and affiliates who park in a metered space or the parking garage must have their vehicle registered with a current permit valid for parking on campus.
Annual permits are valid from the date of purchase through August 20 of the next academic year. It is the permit holder’s responsibility to know the expiration date and renew as necessary.

Faculty/Staff Eligibility
For the purpose of issuing permits, the term employee is anyone who works for Butler University, both part-time and full-time, and affiliates. This does not include graduate assistants, research assistants, student interns, etc. They are considered students and will be issued a student permit.
Employees who work full-time on campus, but are not University employees (such as food service personnel, bookstore personnel, etc.) must also purchase a permit. These employees are eligible to receive an “A” permit or contractor status parking. These employees are not eligible for payroll deduction and must purchase their permit with cash, check or credit.
ADA Hangtags
If you have an ADA license plate, state disabled placard/hangtag, or an Indiana Disabled American Veterans license plate, you may park in ADA spaces on University property. You will need to be the owner of the plate/placard/hangtag and the driver of said vehicle to do so. Students and employees will also require a current year parking permit.
The University issues ADA hangtags for temporary ADA needs. Proof of vehicle ownership and ADA status will need to be taken to the Office of Parking Services, located at 4702 Sunset Drive, Suite 500, Indianapolis, IN 46208. There is no additional fee for the ADA hangtag. With this hangtag you can park in any available ADA spot on campus. If there are no available spots, you then may utilize any A, B, or C lot. The ADA hangtag must be visible at all times or you could be subject to a citation. If the hangtag is determined to have been shared or abused, parking privileges may be revoked. Students and employees will also require a current year parking permit.
Butler University recognizes those who may need assistance. With that, the Office of Parking Services offers an ADA hangtag option to those individuals who have a state issued disabled license plate, state issued hangtag (not expired), or a Disabled American Veteran license plate.
Disability is defined as either permanently or temporarily, and includes:
- An obvious physical disability that requires the use of a wheelchair, braces, walker, or crutches.
- The permanent loss of the use of one or both legs.
- Severely restricted mobility, as determined and certified by a physician due to a pulmonary or cardiovascular disability, an arthritic condition, or an orthopedic, or neurological impairment.
Examples of conditions which do not normally require special parking privileges are: anemia, hypoglycemia, menstrual difficulties, allergies, migraine headaches, diabetes, foot problems, hepatitis, mononucleosis, or arthritis (without complications).
Please note that these definitions and examples are intended as a guideline only. Consideration will be given to post-surgical applicants, pregnant women, as well as others as individual circumstances warrant. For assistance in determining eligibility, please contact the Office of Parking Services at 317-940-9243
Cost of the ADA Tag
There is no additional fee for the ADA hangtag.
Non-University Employees Working on Campus
Non-University Employees who work on campus are also known as affiliates. Affiliates (such as food service personnel, bookstore personnel, etc.) must also purchase a permit. These employees are eligible to obtain either one of the employee permits (“A”, “A1”, or “PG”) or they may purchase a hangtag to park at Hinkle Fieldhouse. The hangtag is available for a $50 annual fee or $25 for a semester. Affiliates are not able to register a vehicle via My.Butler the way that faculty, staff and students do because there is no mechanism for automated billing through payroll deduction. Instead, affiliates need to register their vehicles in the Parking Services office, located in suite 500 of the Sunset Avenue parking garage. Payment may be made with cash, check or credit.
Temporary/Guest Permits
Butler offers Temporary Parking Passes to qualified individuals. Learn more on the Temporary Parking Passes page.
Permit Display
The easiest way to avoid a parking citation is to properly display your permit and park in the area designated for that permit.
Do not:
- Use tape to secure permit to window. The permit is a sticker and will adhere to the window on its own.
- Leave your permit lying on the seat, dash, or the back window of the car.
Affixed permits must match the vehicle registration. The permit must be placed on the back window, lower left-hand corner. If you have a convertible top, you may place the permit on the lower left corner of the windshield. Motorcycle permits must be displayed on the windshield, if applicable, or the front fork.
Lost or Stolen Permits
The University is not responsible for lost permits. Make sure your permit makes it onto the back window of the vehicle. You may obtain a replacement permit at the Office of Parking Services, located at 4702 Sunset Drive, Suite 500, Indianapolis, IN 46208. If the permit is stolen, a police report must be filed in order to receive the replacement cost of $5. If the permit is lost, the cost of a new permit is the regular current price of the permit.
If the lost or stolen permit is recovered, it must be returned to the Office of Parking Services immediately. Use of a lost or stolen permit may result in a citation or impoundment of the vehicle.
